Buyer’s Guide - August 2026

The 10 best HAProxy monitoring tools, ranked

HAProxy sits in front of everything, so when it slows down, every backend behind it looks slow too. We ranked ten monitoring tools on HAProxy metric depth, collection resolution, alerting, time-to-value, and what actually makes the bill grow. The winner collects per-second, detects anomalies out of the box, and charges per node rather than per byte.

Background Hero

Why this list exists

HAProxy monitoring is not host monitoring with a load balancer attached. The proxy is the single choke point for all your traffic, which means the metrics that matter are the ones that move in seconds: session rate, queue depth, backend health-check transitions, and HTTP status-code breakdowns. A tool that polls every minute will happily show you a flat green line while a burst of 5xx errors burns through one backend.

The mistake we see buyers make is treating HAProxy as another box to ping. Up/down checks tell you the process is alive. They do not tell you that queue time tripled, that one server in a backend pool started flapping its health checks, or that session utilization is creeping toward the configured limit. Those are the signals that page you before users notice, and they are what this ranking grades on.

Three dimensions decide the outcome for most teams:

  1. Metric depth and resolution. Does the tool collect frontend, backend, server, and process metrics, and at what interval? Per-second collection catches queue buildup and session spikes that 15-second or 60-second polling averages away.
  2. Time-to-value. How many moving parts stand between you and a useful dashboard? Some tools need an exporter, a scrape config, a data source, and imported dashboards. Others need one line in your HAProxy config.
  3. Cost shape. Per-host, per-GB, per-monitor, or self-hosted operational cost. Load balancers sit on the hot path and generate high-volume telemetry, so usage-based bills grow exactly where traffic grows.

One note on pricing: we do not quote competitor list prices. Vendors change them, negotiate them, and meter them differently, and a stale number is worse than no number. We describe the pricing shape, what makes the bill grow, and link each vendor’s pricing page so you can check current figures yourself. For hands-on configuration walkthroughs, our HAProxy guides cover stats-page setup, Prometheus endpoint exposure, and alerting patterns in detail. For Netdata’s per-node pricing details, see our pricing page.

Methodology

How we evaluated HAProxy monitoring tools

We assembled this shortlist from vendor documentation, integration pages, community threads where practitioners compare what they actually run, and third-party comparisons. Every tool listed here has a documented HAProxy integration, collector, template, or plugin; tools with only generic TCP checks did not make the cut.

The two heaviest criteria are HAProxy metric depth (25%) and data resolution (20%), because a load balancer fails fast and averages hide the failure. Deployment effort (15%), alerting and anomaly detection (15%), and total cost of ownership (15%) follow, with ecosystem breadth (10%) as the tiebreaker for teams that need HAProxy data correlated with logs, traces, or the rest of the stack.

Vendor 01 / 10 · #netdata

01

Netdata

Real-time, per-second infrastructure monitoring with ML-based anomaly detection and a zero-configuration HAProxy collector.

Netdata dashboard showing application monitoring metrics with per-second charts of requests, sessions, and response times for a web server or proxy like HAProxy

Best for

  • Teams that want per-second HAProxy visibility without configuring scrape intervals or exporters
  • SREs and sysadmins who want ML-based anomaly detection on every metric out of the box
  • Organizations that want predictable per-node pricing instead of usage-based bills

Pricing

  • Agents are open source (AGPL) and free
  • Netdata Cloud Business starts at $4.50/node/month on annual plans, and the per-node price decreases as node count grows
  • A free Cloud tier exists for small fleets
  • Per-node pricing means HAProxy traffic spikes do not move the bill

Pros

  • Per-second collection via the go.d HAProxy module, with a default update_every of 1 second
  • Collects backend sessions, session rates, average response time, queue time, current queue, HTTP responses by status class, and network I/O
  • Supports multiple HAProxy instances, including remote instances, in one collector configuration
  • ML-based anomaly detection runs on every metric with no configuration
  • 850+ integrations cover the system, network, containers, and databases around HAProxy on the same node

Where teams pair it

  • The collector requires the PROMEX addon enabled in HAProxy; there is no auto-detection and no stats-socket fallback, so one config change is required before metrics flow
  • No default alerts ship with the HAProxy integration, so teams that want paging on queue depth or server-down events create those rules themselves
  • The metric set focuses on backend and proxy-level stats; teams that need per-server health-check detail, SSL metrics, or sticktable metrics often pair it with a tool that reads the stats socket

Verdict

Netdata leads this list because it is the only tool here that combines per-second HAProxy collection, ML anomaly detection on every metric, and full-stack context from the same agent, at a per-node price that does not grow with traffic. Enable the PROMEX endpoint in your HAProxy config and the dashboards are already there. The honest trade-offs: you enable PROMEX yourself, you build your own HAProxy alert rules, and the collector does not expose SSL or sticktable depth. For most teams running HAProxy on the hot path, per-second resolution plus anomaly detection out of the box outweighs all three.

Vendor 02 / 10 · #prometheus-grafana

02

Prometheus + Grafana

The open-source metrics standard: Prometheus scrapes HAProxy’s native Prometheus endpoint and Grafana visualizes it on pre-built dashboards.

Best for

  • Teams already running Prometheus who want HAProxy metrics in the same TSDB
  • Organizations that prefer open-source, self-managed monitoring
  • Platform teams that want full control over scrape intervals, retention, and dashboards

Pricing

  • Open source and self-hosted; you run and operate Prometheus and Grafana yourself
  • Grafana Cloud offers a free tier capped by series, logs, and traces, with usage-based pricing beyond it
  • Hosting, storage, and long-term retention costs are yours to carry in self-hosted mode

Pros

  • HAProxy 2.0+ ships a native Prometheus exporter built into the binary; the standalone prometheus/haproxy_exporter project is retired
  • Grafana Cloud provides prebuilt pre-built HAProxy dashboards (Overview, Frontend, Backend, Server) and 3 alerts, including check flapping
  • PromQL handles rate, histogram, and multi-dimensional queries across HAProxy metrics
  • Huge ecosystem; HAProxy metrics integrate with any Prometheus-compatible tooling

Cons

  • Multi-component setup: HAProxy config, scrape config, data source, and dashboards all need wiring together
  • No built-in log correlation or anomaly detection; you assemble those from other tools
  • Self-hosted retention is your problem; long-term history means Thanos, Mimir, or VictoriaMetrics
  • Scrape intervals are commonly 15 seconds, coarser than per-second collection

Verdict

This is the de facto open-source path, and for teams already in the Prometheus ecosystem it is the lowest-friction option on the list. HAProxy’s built-in endpoint removes the old exporter dependency, and Grafana’s pre-built dashboards cover frontend, backend, and server views. The cost is assembly: four components minimum, anomaly detection and log correlation bolted on separately, and storage capacity planning that never goes away. Rank it second if you already run the stack; rank it lower if you are starting from zero.

Vendor 03 / 10 · #datadog

03

Datadog

A unified SaaS observability platform whose HAProxy integration collects 180+ metrics from the Prometheus endpoint or stats socket, plus logs.

Best for

  • Organizations already standardized on Datadog for APM, logs, and infrastructure
  • Teams that want HAProxy metrics and logs correlated in one UI
  • Enterprises that need service checks tied into a broader incident workflow

Pricing

  • Usage-based: per-host for infrastructure monitoring plus per-GB for log ingestion
  • Free tier capped by host count and retention
  • The bill grows with host count, log volume, and each additional product module

Pros

  • 180+ HAProxy metrics across backend, frontend, listener, process, server, and sticktable scopes, the broadest coverage in this list
  • Collects via the recommended Prometheus endpoint on HAProxy 2+ or the legacy stats socket
  • Same agent collects HAProxy logs from UDP syslog output
  • Service checks (haproxy.backend_up) for backend availability alerting
  • Pre-built dashboards and guided agent installation

Cons

  • Usage-based pricing grows with host count and log volume, and load balancers generate plenty of both
  • Agent setup requires choosing between OpenMetrics and legacy collection modes, which adds configuration complexity
  • Collection interval is not documented as per-second, so real-time granularity is coarser than dedicated per-second tools

Verdict

Datadog is the strongest commercial option for HAProxy metric breadth. Nothing else here touches 180+ metrics with sticktable scope and log correlation in the same agent. The reasons it sits third rather than first are cost shape and granularity: usage-based billing punishes exactly the high-volume data a busy load balancer produces, and the collection interval is not per-second. If your organization already pays for Datadog, enabling the HAProxy integration is an easy yes. If you are choosing fresh, price the log ingestion line carefully.

Vendor 04 / 10 · #zabbix

04

Zabbix

Open-source infrastructure monitoring with official HAProxy templates that poll the stats page and auto-discover frontends, backends, and servers.

Best for

  • Traditional ops teams already running Zabbix for servers and network devices
  • Organizations that want official, maintained HAProxy templates without custom scripts
  • Teams that need low-level discovery of HAProxy frontends, backends, and servers

Pricing

  • Open source and self-hosted; you operate the server, database, and frontend yourself
  • Optional paid support and professional services
  • Real costs are infrastructure, administration time, and any support contract

Pros

  • Official HAProxy templates (by HTTP and by Zabbix agent) maintained by the Zabbix team
  • Low-level discovery automatically creates items for each frontend, backend, and server
  • Collects response time, connection errors, denied responses, queue depth, HTTP status codes, traffic, and health-check status
  • Built-in triggers for server down, high response time, high queue, and session utilization
  • No external scripts required; bulk collection via the stats page

Cons

  • Polling-based collection with configurable intervals; not per-second by default
  • No native logs and metrics correlation for HAProxy
  • Containerized HAProxy monitoring is not natively documented
  • You run and maintain the entire Zabbix stack yourself

Verdict

Zabbix is the strongest self-hosted option for traditional operations teams, with official, vendor-maintained HAProxy templates that include low-level discovery and built-in triggers for server down, high response time, and session utilization. Low-level discovery is a real operational win: add a backend pool and the items appear. The trade-offs are polling resolution, no log correlation, and the operational weight of the Zabbix server itself. If your team already speaks Zabbix, the HAProxy templates are excellent. If you are choosing a new platform for load balancer visibility, per-second tools will show you more.

Vendor 05 / 10 · #dynatrace

05

Dynatrace

Enterprise observability platform with a dedicated HAProxy extension that collects stats remotely via socket or HTTP from an ActiveGate.

Best for

  • Large enterprises with a Dynatrace standard that want HAProxy in the same UI as everything else
  • Teams that want remote HAProxy collection without installing an agent on the load balancer
  • Organizations needing AI-based anomaly detection across HAProxy and dependent services

Pricing

  • Per-host pricing based on memory allocation per host, with infrastructure and full-stack tiers
  • Usage-based add-ons for open ingestion and automation
  • The bill grows with host count and additional product modules

Pros

  • Dedicated HAProxy extension with socket and HTTP collection modes, running remotely from ActiveGate
  • Collects connection, rate, request, error, response, HTTP status, SSL, process, session, and queue metrics
  • Auto-detects multiple HAProxy processes, sockets, and bindings
  • Built-in anomaly detection with notifications
  • Supports HAProxy running in Docker containers

Cons

  • Collection interval is every minute, which is coarse for spotting traffic spikes or session-rate bursts on a load balancer
  • Socket mode requires an open connection from ActiveGate to the HAProxy server, adding network setup
  • The full platform is heavy and costly for smaller teams
  • Some metric keys are only available in socket mode, not HTTP mode

Verdict

Dynatrace does HAProxy properly at the enterprise level: remote collection, broad metrics including SSL, automatic process detection, and anomaly detection that spans HAProxy and the services behind it. The documented 1-minute collection interval is the reason it sits at fifth. For a component that can go from healthy to saturated in seconds, minute-level data is a monitoring compromise you should make knowingly. For Dynatrace shops, this extension is the right answer. For everyone else, the platform cost and the resolution both argue against adopting it for HAProxy alone.

Vendor 06 / 10 · #newrelic

06

New Relic

A SaaS observability platform with an HAProxy quickstart that installs dashboards and infrastructure-agent metric collection in a few clicks.

Best for

  • Teams already on New Relic who want HAProxy dashboards without building them
  • Organizations that prefer a single SaaS platform for metrics, logs, and traces
  • Users who want guided installation via the Instant Observability quickstart

Pricing

  • Usage-based: free tier with data caps, then per-GB ingestion pricing
  • The bill grows with data volume across metrics, logs, and traces, plus user seats
  • No per-host line item, but HAProxy metric volume is a cost factor

Pros

  • Instant Observability quickstart installs a pre-built HAProxy dashboard with one click
  • Collects bytes sent and received per second, frontend statuses, request errors per second, sessions per second, and active servers
  • Runs via the New Relic Infrastructure Agent on the HAProxy host
  • Supports multiple HAProxy instances in one integration
  • Open-source integration code that can be customized

Cons

  • The quickstart documentation is contradictory about whether alerts are included; one section says none, another lists latency and error alerts
  • Metric depth is shallower than dedicated integrations; no per-server health-check detail or SSL metrics documented
  • Usage-based pricing makes high-volume proxy telemetry a cost lever
  • Requires the Infrastructure Agent on each HAProxy host

Verdict

New Relic’s HAProxy quickstart is the fastest path from nothing to a dashboard in the SaaS category, and the core metrics it collects are the right ones: sessions per second, request errors, bytes in and out, active servers. It ranks sixth because depth and alerting completeness lag the tools above it, and the documentation contradicts itself on what alerts you actually get. For existing New Relic accounts, install the quickstart today. For a fresh evaluation, verify the alerting story in your own tenant before relying on it.

Vendor 07 / 10 · #sematext

07

Sematext

A SaaS monitoring platform with a HAProxy integration that collects stats via HTTP or socket and correlates logs with metrics.

Best for

  • Teams that want HAProxy metrics and logs correlated in one SaaS UI
  • Organizations that want anomaly detection on HAProxy metrics without building it
  • Small-to-mid teams that want pre-built dashboards with fast setup

Pricing

  • Per-agent, per-host, per-month subscription with standard and pro tiers
  • Free tier capped by host count and retention
  • The bill grows with monitored host count and log volume

Pros

  • Pre-built HAProxy dashboards for frontend, backend, and health-check metrics
  • Collects via HTTP stats page or UNIX socket, with auto-discovery of HAProxy instances
  • Anomaly detection flags sudden metric shifts without manual threshold tuning
  • Logs and metrics correlation in one platform
  • Supports HAProxy in containers, Kubernetes, VMs, and bare metal

Cons

  • SaaS-only; no self-hosted option for data-sovereignty-sensitive environments
  • Per-agent per-host pricing adds up across a large fleet
  • Metric depth focuses on core stats-page fields; no per-server SSL or sticktable metrics documented

Verdict

Sematext is a sensible mid-tier choice that gets the fundamentals right: stats-page or socket collection, auto-discovery, pre-built dashboards, anomaly detection, and log correlation in one place. Having anomaly detection and log correlation built in sets it apart from tools where those capabilities require separate components. What holds it at seventh is the combination of SaaS-only deployment and per-host pricing that scales linearly with fleet size, plus a metric set that stops at the core stats fields. A good fit for small and mid-sized teams; a harder sell at hundreds of nodes.

Vendor 08 / 10 · #instana

08

IBM Instana

An APM platform whose HAProxy sensor automatically reads the stats socket for 1-second metrics, health signatures, and service mapping.

Best for

  • Teams that want automatic HAProxy discovery with 1-second metric granularity
  • Organizations using Instana for APM that want load balancer context in the service map
  • Platform teams that want health signatures and built-in events for HAProxy

Pricing

  • Per-host subscription under a managed virtual server model
  • The bill grows with the number of monitored hosts
  • Enterprise custom pricing for advanced editions

Pros

  • Automatic sensor deployment via the Instana agent; reads metrics from the HAProxy stats socket
  • 1-second metric granularity for HAProxy, matching the resolution leaders
  • Health signatures continuously evaluate HAProxy performance and trigger events
  • Supports multi-process HAProxy setups
  • Service mapping connects HAProxy to the applications behind it

Cons

  • Monitoring is capped at a limited number of services (combined frontends and backends) per the vendor’s documentation
  • Multi-process mode requires careful stats socket configuration
  • Per-host pricing scales with fleet size
  • The sensor requires the stats socket to be enabled and reachable

Verdict

Instana deserves credit for two things most of this list cannot match: genuine 1-second HAProxy granularity and automatic sensor deployment, with the proxy wired into an application service map. That combination is excellent for APM-centric teams. It ranks eighth because the documented service cap on combined frontends and backends is a hard constraint for large HAProxy deployments, and the socket configuration burden lands on you. If you run Instana already, the sensor is strong. If you are evaluating for HAProxy specifically, confirm the service cap against your proxy topology first.

Vendor 09 / 10 · #manageengine

09

ManageEngine Applications Manager

An application performance monitoring suite with a dedicated HAProxy monitor that tracks frontend, backend, and health metrics with ITSM alerting.

Best for

  • Teams that want on-premises or cloud deployment options

Pricing

  • Per-monitor subscription or perpetual license
  • Free trial available
  • The bill grows with the number of monitored resources and monitors

Pros

  • Dedicated HAProxy monitor with automatic service topology discovery
  • Tracks frontend request rates, session creation rates, denied requests, backend retry rates, and response times
  • Dynamic, adaptive thresholds for connection limits, error rates, and backend response times
  • Alerts via email, SMS, Slack, or ITSM tools

Cons

  • No metrics and logs correlation for HAProxy
  • Limited Kubernetes HAProxy support documented
  • HAProxy monitoring is one module in a large suite with a real learning curve
  • Per-monitor pricing can grow quickly with many frontends and backends

Verdict

Applications Manager is built for IT operations, not SRE, and it shows in both directions. The adaptive thresholds and ITSM alerting are genuinely useful for teams whose incident workflow runs through a service desk, and the HAProxy monitor itself covers the right frontend and backend metrics. It sits ninth because per-monitor pricing punishes rich proxy topologies, there is no log correlation, and collection resolution is not documented as anything close to per-second. Reasonable for an IT-ops-centered organization already in the ManageEngine ecosystem; the wrong tool for real-time load balancer troubleshooting.

Site24x7

A SaaS IT monitoring platform with a Python-based HAProxy plugin that tracks request errors, bytes in and out, queue depth, and session rates.

Best for

  • Teams already using Site24x7 for website, server, and network monitoring
  • Organizations that want HAProxy visibility alongside RUM and infrastructure monitoring in one platform
  • Small teams that want a simple plugin-based setup

Pricing

  • Per-server and per-monitor subscription plans
  • Free trial available
  • The bill grows with the number of servers and monitoring modules

Pros

  • Dedicated HAProxy plugin collects request errors, bytes in and out, current queue, and session rate
  • Part of a broader platform covering websites, servers, networks, and real-user monitoring
  • Plugin runs on the standard Site24x7 Linux agent
  • Performance charts in the Site24x7 web client

Cons

  • The plugin collects only 5 core metrics; no per-server health-check detail, SSL metrics, or HTTP status-code breakdown
  • Requires manual plugin installation and HAProxy stats-page configuration
  • Python-based plugin requires Python 2.7 or later on the host
  • No containerized HAProxy documentation

Verdict

Site24x7’s HAProxy plugin is honest about what it is: a lightweight add-on for shops that already monitor everything else in Site24x7. Five metrics is enough to know the proxy is alive and roughly how busy it is, and nothing more. It ranks last because serious load balancer troubleshooting needs per-server health, HTTP status breakdowns, and response-time detail that this plugin does not collect, and the manual setup removes the convenience argument. Fine as a checkbox in an existing Site24x7 deployment; not a tool to adopt for HAProxy.
